Most people that are in the pub and chatting are talking alcohol driven rubbish anyway. They are there either because they need to pretend to be "social drinkers" or to get away from whoever they left at home. Mindless social interaction does however have it's purpose, after all how would you know that the bloke is trying to get into your knickers or that he is boring? Sometimes the striking up of a conversation with a stranger developes into a lasting friendship but you must go through all the boring ones to find the interesting.

I see no point in it at all.
However, as Shakespeare once said: "All the world's a stage " etc. Sometimes, even if it is mindless, we all have to become actors and play a part because it might be purposeful.
In other words, anyone with ambition of any sort learns to put up with interactions they would otherwise find distasteful or sickening, and smile and pretend they enjoy it.
It is called manipulation, a.k.a. winning people over to your side and influencing them.
If it doesn't serve your purpose, then be rude to them.
Otherwise treat them kindly; they're human after all. And go somewhere else.

It depends on who is chatting you up and what you are talking about, I went out last night and I had a great time at the pub with some friends and yes we were being chatted up by blokes but not everything has to end in sex and as long as you both understand each other from the start it can be harmless and fun.

Humans, by nature are very social creature. Even if it is mundane, it is still necessary to have social interaction. Our social need goes back to the earliest humans, who had to live in close social groups in order to survive because humans alone are very weak, without a lot of defense, if any. But together we were able to survive by hunting together, watching out for each other, and inventing tools. Now that we are almost completely past the threat of being hunted by other animals, we still feel the need to socialize in a lot of ways even if it is purposeless.

Is this a social experiment? Are you just asking this question because you're bored? Did you ask this question because you want some fun?
Well if you answered those questions at all, then I just performed some psychoanalysis on you. I just increased my social awareness. If we were in physical and auditory range of eachother I am doing some social networking.

i love social interaction, so i cant' agree 100%, though your 2 examples do make sense
my hubby on the other side, will be totally on your side. he has said to me before ,that while travelling with workmates over a long distance , that he once tried to be the conversationalist , but then thought to himself how mindless it was and quite pointless.
