Great place. Beautiful sites. The Alps is incredible. The German people can be a bit stand-offish though. Always a good idea to ask Sprechen zie English before asking a question. Very expensive though. The Euro is killing the $$$

The people are very unfriendly. It's true. Americans always say that of the French, but that's not true at all. I find that the Germans are the rudest Europeans. What makes it ok to stare people down when you enter a restaurant or train? I didn't have that problem in France or in England or anywhere else. Some of the sales people in the Munich department stores are ridiculously rude! I know that this is a well known fact and has been well documented by authors such as L Thoma, but it's still ridiculous. You should hear what they say when they think you're a foreigner and you don't understand (I in fact do understand). I have also met some really nice sales people, but those are the younger kids who are working during school breaks....the worst was working at the watch department in the Karstadt at the Muenchner Freiheit. I guess she was PO'd that she was working her crap job while other people were on vacation! Other than that, you can't learn to speak Bavarian, you sound ridiculous if you try, the economy is getting better and about the best thing is the sites and the food (but you have to know where to eat or else it could be not so great)...that is, if you can afford any of it.

I've lived in Heidelberg, Germany for about 1 1/2 years now and I LOVE it over here. I have not run into any rude people (I honestly don't know how people get that impression---do unto others!!) I am still trying to learn the language, but most Germans seem thrilled that you are trying. I also had my son over here (in a German hospital with a German doctor) and I loved it--I wouldn't go back to an American doctor if I was pregnant!

Places and views:
West Germany, mostly quite beautiful and modern
East Germany... not bad, but can get quite depressing in certain parts (you can still see war relics...)
Food:
Yummy! But can get quite boring if you're to stay here.
Beverage:
German Beer.... mmmm...... (is that why germans mostly have beer bellies? but of course, the english are the worst)
People:
Bavarians are quite modern but some are very proud (like most rich people)
Munichians are cute!!!!! But yea, like I said, can get quite proud too.
East Germans (in the cities) are quite nice. Go to the "Neustadt" of every city, then you'll meet nicer people. The "altstadt" are mostly stuffed with stuck up old people.
Don't even think about going to small towns in East Germany.... most of them're really racists... never left the country but think they're the best and foreigners (only apply to latinos, east europeans, africans and asians) are there to snatch their work and beg for their money. (They don't even serve you properly even if you're as rich as Queen Elizabeth; just glance over you like you're some squashed bug)
language:
love it!

It's a really good place to go . I lived there for 3 years and it was really enjoyable. Bavarians take a little bit of getting used to as they are a really conservative bunch and tend to view non-Bavarians ( including other Germans ) with a degree of suspicion. Make a little effort with the language and be friendly and you will be ok.

Are you planning a trip?? Its a great place to go!!!
I have family there it is beautiful, the people are friendly, and well, I speak the language, so for me its easy. But most people are willing to help those who don' t know German...I suggest you get a German-English phrase book / dictionary for those encounters with people who don't understand English...but quite a few do...its taught in school there...

You must be German, because your English sucks...
I lived in Germany for 16 years....and I can say that there are good and bad people there...just like in any other country....I must say that people are not very friendly though- in general....a lot of people there have a hard time accepting that there are other races other than Caucasians and that they are here on this planet to stay.
