In most mammal species, showing ones teeth shows that I have the wherewithal, with these teeth to battle. Maybe, it is a sign, throughout sociological centuries in humans, that we are just saying, "Hey, I am not afraid of you"....which could now just be translated into a friendly gesture....dunno.

A genuine smile is the sign of fun, laughter, and yes love. A smile also can be an acknowledgment of shared secret or agreement. A smile can be false and hide the anger a person feels. a person who smiles all the time can be hiding a mistrust.
But a person who smiles from the heart is a person to trust.
if it sounds confusing, it sure can be. a smile is a thing to treasure, so smile often

or even a concealed envy...
Sometimes a smile can be a disguise for some game of character assassination. So, at times, we must be on guard as to who is smiling and who is our true friend.
Never allow a pat on the back, a smile or a compliment fool you...There are many reasons why people do what it is they do and not everything is in the form of a compliment. Without being cynical, or vicious, ...smile back.
