18/30 = x/120

reduced to :3/5 = x/20

x= 12 - nothing is canceled out - it's only reduced

yes you can cancel to make question simpler. here it goes like this
18/30=x/120
3/5 = x/120 (dividing right hand side of equation by 6)
x= 120*18/30
x=4*18
x= 72

18/30=x/120
multiplying both sides by 120
(18/30)*120=x
now cancel 120 with 30 and the answer is 18*4=72

You are not really cancelling, you are reducing the numbers. And you are just creating fractions which are equivilant. So 1/3 is the same as 2/6 is the same as 3/9, is the same as 4/12.

Hope that helps.

yes because x+4x18 which would be 72 so if you cancelled it out it ends up being 3/5

the easiest way would be to cross multiply, so that way, you get 30x=18(20).

then, 30x=360

divide by 30 on each side,

x=12
