Department of Defense is the combination of all branches of the military and it's leadership. Basically it is everything military. "Working" for the DoD when you get out is an option but with MP experience? You need to look into that. You don't want to get out of the Army to become a security guard at the Pentagon. If you enlist for a very technical job there is a good chance you will have more marketability. Go to www.usajobs.com and do a search for all jobs under the DoD and that will give you a better idea of what you need to look at as far as your future MOS and after Army job prospects.

The United States Department of Defense (DOD) is the federal department charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government relating directly to national security and the military. The DOD is the major tenant of The Pentagon, and it is divided into three major subsections—the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Air Force. Among the many Defense Dept. agencies are the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (see Strategic Defense Initiative), the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), and the National Security Agency (NSA). The department also operates several joint service schools, including the National War College.

Getting a job in the DoD would require a college degree or at the very least military experience. I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but you can't enlist with the DoD, just one of the agencies that fall under it (Air Force, Army, Navy).

The Executive Branch of the Federal government is divided into many different "Departments", i.e. Dept of Education, Dept of State, Dept of the Interior, etc. These various Departments make up the core of how the Federal government operates.

Each Department is headed by a cabinet-level official, such as the Secretary of Education, Secretary of the Interior, etc., and as such is nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

The Department of Defense is that branch of the Federal government responsible for all military operations in support of national policy. Commonly called "DoD", it is run by the Secretary of Defense, currently SecDef Rumsfeld, who reports directly to the President.

DoD was created in 1946 following WWII. Prior to the Dept of Defense, each branch of the service had a separate cabinet status and there was a separate Dept of War. The 1946 legislative action placed all military branches under the new DoD, and created the Air Force as a separate service.

All branches of the military (Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force) as well as a number of Agencies fall under the aegis of DoD.

DoD does employ a limited number of police officers, primarily to provide security at the Pentagon and other DoD facilities.
