I used to waitress for like 5 years, and in my opinion it is fine to tip in change, because we can always change it in at the end of the night. Just try to avoid pennies, comes off as kinda rude.

Hey- I'm not a server...but if you wanna leave me a tip for this answer (say...$100.00 bucks all in pennies, francs, or yen, that would be fine with me) If they are picky about you giving them money- any kind of money, then they were born into the wrong life. I think your fine. Also, the fact that you left no pennies shows that you weren't trying to be disrespectful, you were just broke, or at least down to counting change at the time.

i always liked change, for different reasons
when i was a waitress i lived in an apartment and had to go to the laundry mat, quarters were handy
i had a big water bottle i always dumped nickels and pennies.....i cashed it in after a year and blew it all on the casino boat
i always give my dimes to the march of dimes.....my mother and grandmother always have too

I don't think a waitress would scoff at money, but it's always better to tip in dollars. Just courtesy.

Actually I think change is ok
its when you tip them with a credit card
that stinks because they have to claim that at end of the year
