if public museums got their collections from donations, where do private museums got theirs?..

Often, it is a single collector, or perhaps a collectors' society, that endows a private museum. They like the idea of having it continue under their control, and sometimes things are loaned to the museum instead of permanently donated.

Public museums do not get their collections just from donations. They also get money donated which allows them to buy specimens from dealers.

Many artists and art collectors open a museum to share their treasures... and they also receive donations.
