Yes. For one thing, I keep enough money in my account that there shouldn't be any bank fees. If there are any, there's a problem. For another, once someone stole one of my checks and forged it for a large amount of money. If I hadn't looked at my bank statement, I wouldn't have known and I could have started bouncing checks. And when I was much younger and didn't have much money, when I balanced my checkbook sometimes I'd find subtraction mistakes I'd made which could have caused me to start bouncing checks.

If you really, really hate balancing your checkbook, I recommend keeping at least two accounts. One would be for big purchases that don't happen very often - rent, car insurance, taxes. It would have more money in it, and since it didn't have very many transactions, it wouldn't be hard to balance.

The other account would have much less money in it, enough for trips to the grocery store and so forth. As long as you did all of your transactions with an ATM card, the balance shown on the bank's computer would always be pretty up to date. As long as you looked over your monthly statement to see if there was anything weird, you MIGHT be able to get away with not balancing that checkbook.

I tunes should be completely seperate. There should be a phone number on your bank statement from the Napster service center. Call this number and tell them you didn't know you were being billed and ask them to cancel whatever service they are providing and also ask them to reimburse you for every month of service that you were billed for. I had the same thing happen to me once with something else online. They are really sneaky sometimes. Remember that you need to ask them to reimburse you specifically, otherwise they will probably tell you there is nothing they can do. The company that did it to me was very good about reimbursing me. It should be okay.

I do (and its called bank reconciliation or something) because every know and then there's a slip up and you've been charged too much for something. Also, it's your money, so it is good to keep track of exactly where its going.

Yes, I always do. I do this because I have had charges taken off that shouldn't have been and also had checks come out of my account that should have come out of another persons account but someone accidentally transposed two of the account numbers.

Absolutely. Banks are managed by people and people make mistakes. I always check not once but twice.

Of course, just to make they don't overcharge by mistake. Or that some store charged you twice for one item.
