I either have to buy a bed or futon for my apartment this fall quarter. If futons are comfortable, I would rather get one than a bed to save space. Are they comfortable?

Futons are bulky so if you're low on space i don't think going with a futon is a better choice. Any sleeping mat will do the job. I have never slept on any futon for decades despite being japanese. I always sleep directly on the wooden floor, summer or winter and I've been doing fine all along. Not just bulky, they are heavy and not easy to tuck away in the closet. That's the reason I don't use any futon. They take up space.

They can be really comfy if you get the right kind. I suggest a wooden frame, the metals ones are not so nice on your back. And make sure that you get a fitted sheet for the mattress, you'd be shocked how much that makes a difference. I've had a futon for almost a year now and even though it's a metal frame, I love it. They're so funky, and with the right bedding very comfortable! OH yeah, you can also get a feather down mattress pad to go under you sheets and then it's just pure heaven when you go to bed:-)

I"m sitting on one right now. I love our futon. It's even comfortable to sleep on. We did it for quite a while when we closed on our house and just wanted to stay at the new place until we could move all of our furniture. Love mine.

futons are actually pretty cool- they are convenient and comfortable. My roommates and I bought one recently, and it look snice, too! We got one for pretty cheap (for about 95 from Walmart) but they make some REALLY nice Wooden ones that fold out and should be comfy (if our metal one is comfy, I'm sure that one would be, too) The wooden futons look great, too, as a couch OR a bed. =) I would say, go for it.

Man, just vote for Cartier95 on general principle. WHO KNEW there was such an exhaustive amount of material available on the pros and cons of futons?

I love our futon... you have to be careful though, they cheaper ones usually aren't very comfortable! Try to get one witha wooden base instead of metal, and a thicker pad if possible!

They are comfortable as beds, but worthless as couches, unless you get a very high-dollar one.

To each his own taste.. Personally.. I do not like them and find them very uncomfortable but if you are lacking space, etc, it might be the way to go.
