What motivates me is my desire to have a roof over my head. If they pay me fairly, I appreciate just having a job. There are hundreds of people who will be happy to take it if I don't appreciate it.

In no order:

A flat structure system in which work processes are open to constuctive criticism, implementation and subsequent monitoring, by all staff.

Managers ( directors to managers ) who are honest, candid and take active participation in the company's operations. One of many indicators are that usually the good managers are first in to work and last out of work. How many companies can boast that ?

One would hazard a guess that special events, discounts, etc are usually copy cats without substance of large corporations by small and medium companies. In otherwards, how do these events galvanise the work force ( directors to the lowest rank and file. )

One may get a larger than average real wage yet feel unappreciated at work.

Staff turnover rates is a key indicator and a bane to human resource departments or payroll departments, who usually disclose numbers with reluctance. One wonders how much performance smoothing occurs and if it may have legal implications.

Honest companies with consistenly successful capital appreciation, usually have good human capital management and beat the herd effect.

They have parties like 3-4 times a year. Last year with the price of gas being so high, they gave everyone $100 cash, even the people who drive company cars. Christmas bonuses, even to new people. Company t-shirts, recognition in company news letters. I got free tickets for my family to see Talladaga Nights on opening nite at our local theatre. They really do give a lot of incentive to keep their employees happy.

until i got fired recently from my job at a online university. The students was my motivation. I love to help encourage a prospect student in continuing their education. I had such a good feeling when i would impact a student life. It didnt matter to me that my boss was an a$$hole who could care less about the students he only saw them as dollar signs and would refer to them as that. I loved talking to students that were serious about furthering their education.

We have a steak dinner every month we don't have an accident, & get special treats (nachos, ice cream, popcorn, etc.) when we break production records. Also, we get awards every 5 years of service on the job.
