Apparently "the owner of the protected content" requires that I update DRM before I can view it. Is this safe to do? Have I unwittingly downloaded something dodgy?

Thanks!

DRM stands for digital rights management, it's usually applied to music and other copyrighted content in Windows Media Player. If you've downloaded from a trusted source it might be OK, but it might also be a ruse to get you to install spyware.
