The people that answered Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, and the Detroit Red Wings are obviously on crack as:
a.) Stevey Y is retired (sorry buddy) and
b.) Shanahan doesn't even play for the Red Wings anymore (not to mention that he's WAY past his prime).
I think the Ducks are the team to watch out for this year. Pronger, Selanne and the Niedermayer brothers are just way too good. I think they're early cup contenders.
In the East, I've got to go with Buffalo because they're fast, gritty, and have a great coach. Carolina doesn't scare me - actually they suck - and neither does New Jersey. Ottawa has no goaltending, so they'll make a quick exit.
Dark horse teams this year include: The Montreal Canadiens (they now have a strong offensive core, good coaching, and a well-balanced team), Florida Panthers (they have veteran leadership and skilled players - but I must say that their arena sucks.)
There are others as well. If I had to pick a team for the cup right now I'd honestly say Montreal vs. Mighty Ducks with the ducks taking it.
Best player of the year? Why not Crosby? He got progessively better as the year went on. He'll be playing with Malkin. Should be fun to watch.
Ovechkin also. He's explosive and basically carried the Capitals last year, and probably will this year as well.
All-rounded, what about Shaun Horcoff? He's awesome and he's really coming into his own. Face-offs, passing, skating, he's a good player.
Pronger will be a dominant force on the blue line with Niedermayer - I would NEVER want to play against those 2. Selanne is going to have an awesome year as well.
So that's my 2 cents. We'll see what happens I guess...

well most people will say Joe Thornton because he won the scoring race last year, but the best for the past 10 years is: froward- Jaromir Jarg {NYR}
defence- Nicklas Lidstrom {DET}
goalie- Martin Brodeur {NJ}
this guys have been the best of the best every year and you can't take that away from them.
well the team i see is going to be very dominate this year is the Calgary Flames. with the pick up of Alex Tanguay that will really help Iginla get his game and scoring touch back. and we all know about the Kipper. i think Calgary Flames will win the Presidents Trophy. I'm not saying who will win the Stanley Cup cause nobody can predict that, the playoffs in the NHL is the hardest Cup to win in any professional sport in the world.

I think the best player in the NHL is Peter Forseberg. He is the best two way player. He can do it all. Nicklas Lidstrom is the best defenceman in the league right now. I would like my team, the Wings to be the best this season but with Hasek in net that is not going to happen. I say watch out for the Ducks.

Best player in history is Gretzky. Last seaon, it's either Thronton or Jagr. In a couple of years, it'll be Ovechkin, Crosby or Malkin. The best team this year is going to be Calgary. They probably have the most all-rounded team backed by Kiprusoff, the best goalie right now.

Easily Crosby.
Although Malkin will be #2 soon..
Oh yea and the top team will be one that the refs want to win. Probably the Dead Things will be up there again. But Carolina has mainly Canadians so they should be. Watch for Jersey to bounce back again too.

The best player in the NHL would have to be Nick Lindstrom. He is great at both ends of the ice. I think the best team this year will be San Jose. With Thornton,Cheechoo, and Toskala they will be almost unstoppable.

Ovechkin is a damn good player .He plays Canadian for sure with a genuine love for it and that puts him over anybody. He's a combination Pavel Bure and Danny Markov . The best team will be the ones that get the best penalty calls it sickens me to say.
