Back in 1969, Congress was in session for 350 days out of the year. In 2006, the leadership has decided to devote 72 days, or a little over two months, to official legislative business. When Mondays and Fridays are included in this total (voting generally only takes place Tuesday through Thursday), this number rises to 125 days.

This is absolutely ridiculous!! Why aren't we demanding our Congress-people to work as many days a year as we do!! I haven't taken a vacation since May 2003 because I can't afford to, but Congress average wage is over $170,000 per year, not including stocks, bonuses, and "other". What gives? Why do we accept this, aren't we their boss?

Notice the change in the number of days in DC happened about the time that traveling to and from DC became more possible by airplane. Instead of traveling by train or car across country for several days, now most Representatives can take a plane in a few hours. Most travel back to their districts each weekend and do business while there.

When Members of Congress are not in DC and in session, most are back in their home districts meeting with their constituents who can not afford to travel to DC. During the August and Winter Breaks the Members keep office hours in their district offices and also travel around the district to town halls and other engagements.

Yes and we have a chance to fire them this Nov , when you go to vote .
The biggest mistake in the Constitution is that the American People can't make Congress instantly , do the right thing or stop them from doing the wrong thing .
Waiting every two years to vote them out maybe to long for some of their actions
Encourage everyone to go VOTE , VOTE , VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. This, like school vacations, is a holdover from the days when a gentleman congressman needed time to go home and tend to his plantation, farm, business, etc. Of course, he still needs time to go home and update himself on what's happening in his district in person, but with modern communications, he doesn't need that much time.

They must be made aware of this and voted out if they don't comply.
After that happens a few times (they are too dumb to get it the first time around!), they'll come around...

We can't get them to do their job when they are there. The more time the spend, the more likely they are to screw things up.
