1) possibly, depending on the problem
2) not normally, sometimes on eBay but it has to be an EXACT match and you may have to keep looking for awhile
3) no, Dell MAY sell you one specific to that PC. Dell used to offer that option at the time you bought your PC new but I can imagine that it would not be cheap if they supply one after the PC left their facilities.

You have to make your back up system disks before the problem occurs so that if and when it occurs, you are prepared. I like to back up my PCs with Acronis True Image but there are others available. Google "system backup software". They do work well but the KEY piece of advice is to make your system backups BEFORE you operate your PC.

the attempt means it may work and it may not

when this happened to me, I had an HP computer that had a restore disc copied onto the hardrive in a separate partition

that means the restore files where all there on the harddrive and I shouldn't need the actual disc, sadly, my failure WAS the harddrive and that ruined the restore files that came with the computer

you should try to find documentation that came with your computer and see if you have a restore capability already on your harddrive

if you can't find the manuals, you can always try it and see if it asks you to put in the disc, or just goes ahead and runs

I had to call Hewlette Packard (the maker of my computer) and they sent me a set of recover discs (I think there were 7 of them) and they charged me about $25 including shipping, supposedly just to pay for the physical discs, not the software which I already owned, bought with the computer

I completed the restore onto a new harddrive I had to buy (walmart, 80 gig, $75) and everything has worked great ever since

of course, I lost everything that was on the hard drive that died and a full restore often does not save your files

good luck

often a reloading of the operating system with a restore function will completely fix a seriously ailing computer, but many times there is a hardware problem that will have to be repaired

again, good luck

try to find a number for the computer manufacturer and get their recommendations on restoring the operating system

Go to the person you bought it from and see if you can get the disk. In 2000 they still gave you a disk with your computer. Wal-Mart sells Windows upgrades, I think they are about $100. If you format your drivers will no longer work. A system disk will have a code number, that has to be the same as what is in your computer or the system disk will not work either. You really need to contact DELL and give them your serial number. Maybe you can buy a disk from them.

That happened to me 2 times (windows error or something like that) but my computer, in addition to telling me to make discs, has a back up hard drive to restore the system. I would turn it on and it would say Press F11 or ?F10 for recovery. The computer would work again, but i lost EVERYTHING pics, music, documents! So i got an external hard drive now if the computer crashes again i will still have all my stuff. The external hard drive cost ~100 but its sooo worth it. Better than putting everything on CD's and actually cheaper in the long run.Good luck to you!!
Oh and no you have to make the recovery disks or hope your computer has one built in like mine that will restore your computer to the way it was when you bought it.

Press whichever button your Dell tells you to press, when booting, to restore your system.
