I've also noticed that whenever I press on the gas pedal the car starts to shake. Could it be motor mounts?

Could be dirty spark plugs and lousy timing
Also, you may have some water in your fuel tank. Adding some alcohol should get rid of that. When did you last replace your fuel filter?

What type of vehicle do you drive? Is it front or rear wheel drive? My first instinct is to suspect a U-JOINT in the drive line. If this is the case, get it fixed A.S.A.P. Sometimes a vehicle's vibration will level out with speed, but not always. If your vehicle is a front wheel drive, you may have a bearing going out; do you hear a "grinding" sound, or a squeal? Does the vehicle make a "clunking" sound when turned at low speed either left or right? If so, you have an outer C.V. joint going out. Once again, replace A.S.A.P.. Purchase the whole shaft. The C.V. kits are available, but since the flood of front wheel drive cars on the market, they have become cost prohibitive. A shaft will run you anywhere from $59- $120, depending upon your make and model. A U-Joint will run you about $24 on the high side. Go to www.napaonline.com
You can look up your car parts there. Good Luck

If it was your tires then you would probably get vibrations at higher speeds.
I'm guessing that you might want to look at changing your air folter, fuel filter and check your spark plugs and related wires. If you have an older car without fuel injection then check your points and condenser....maybe a cracked distributor cap.
All of these are inexpensive to fix and they can all be done in your driveway.
Sounds like a fuel problem to me.......check the air filter first.
