It is the French Indian war. Because the British were killing the native americans , the Indians allied with the french. The colonist in the original 13 American colonies wanted more land but the French claimed all of the land around the Mississippi river. The British attacked a french fort in Ohio launching the war. Spain was also allied with France, but the French lost and at the Treaty of Paris they gave Great Britain all the land east of the Mississippi and Spain got everything west of exchange for Cuba, the British had taken over Cuba during the war.
After wards The British wanted the colonist to pay up because of all the money they spent on the war, which helped spark the beginning of the American Revolution.

Based on the title of the book and the information you've given, I would guess that it was the French and Indian war (1754-1763)
