Go to the sound card manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers. Example: http://www.creative.com

It could be a number of things. Check the speakers are connected to the right port. Check that they are switched on and the volume is turned up. Check to see if your soundcard is correctly installed. Try reinstalling the drivers, or checking the card manufacturers website for updated drivers. If you have on-board sound, make sure the card is enabled in your BIOS.

If the speakers are new or first time connecting speakers to computer, make sure that your computer is set up to use the speakers. Go to start->control panel->sounds and audio devices and you will find the control panel to your sound system. Check to see that mute isn't selected, that the speakers are showing up and that the computer is configured for the speakers

First step to check is the driver and if the OS can "see" your sound card. The easiest way to check is in the Control Panel and click on Sound. Do you see the play button darken there for you to click on? If it is dark then your driver is good.

I would then check the volume panel and make sure the WAV and Master volume levels are up max. Also check if other relevant volume levels need to be up max.

If you do not see the darken play button in the control panel, then you need to install the driver for the sound card first.
