California is a pretty big state. Aside for the desert or the mountains, even if you only divide it into north and south - there are at least 2 separate climate systems.

In Northern California, you can have an early snowfall in late September or early October. In Southern California, it's still pleasantly warm. In the desert area - Palm Springs - it's still summer during the day but gets cool in the evening. The valley floor is hot, but there can be snow on the mountains behind Palm Springs.

Even LA varies because a few miles inland is warmer than the coast. San diego is pretty much highs of 70-72 most of the year.
