Can you give some examples? I'm confused as to whether the imperfect has to agree with the gener and number of thedirect object like in past participle.

With imperfect you would treat the verb exactly the same way you would with the present. You never have agreement with the direct object. The only time you need to worry about agreement with the direct object is when you're dealing with a verb that is conjugated with a past participle...that's to say with passe compose, plus-que-parfait, conditionel passe, etc.

Some examples:
Ma soeur mangeait des pommes.
Ma soeur les mangeait.
But...
Ma soeur a mangé des pommes.
Ma soeur les a mangées.

Hope I was able to help. Feel free to email me if you need more clarification.
