Your nose is the most aerated and moist and supplies unlimited quantities of bacterial food secreted continuously by the nasal mucosa. It contains glycoprotein and dissolved salts. In other words, it is a breeding ground for bacteria which are always present. Many of the common bacteria associated with humans are coloured , staphyclococcus aureus is a golden yellow for example, and pseudomonas pyocyanea (to be precise) is a shade of blue! Normally there and a multitude of other organisms that are inhaled continuously into the nose are flushed out by the runny mucus, which is swallowed. The bacteria are usually digested. However, if a situation arises where the flow of mucus slows down and then becomes much thicker in response to an infection of any kind, then the bacteria , in their ideal home, can multiply and produce the colour mucus as you described. This as many parents know is one of the less endearing characteristics of babies and young children! And if you are wondering where the green comes from, remember what happens when you mix blue and yellow.

The green colour is due to immune cells called neutrophils. These are the first cells to appear when bacteria start infecting the nasopharynx. Neutrophils will engulf the bacteria (phagocytosis) and begin to destroy them within themselves using potent digestive enzymes (amongst other things, another being hydrogen peroxide). One of these is lactoferrin and other enzymes are dependent on iron for their activity. The colouration therefore comes from the iron. Ferrous iron compounds are green. It turns yellow the bacteria have been around for a while and other cells start moving in and dying

The really yellow green stuff means you have a sinus infection. The color comes from dead white blood cells that have died trying to fight the bacteria.

boogies can be any colour !! if they are in their pure form (i.e collection of mucous cells) they should be transparent .. if they mix with dust from air they can be grey .. if they mix with blood they can be red ... boogies are cool stuff they prevent any microorganisms from entereing into your lungs and cause a disease ... scientifically you should hang on to those and not play with them or chuck them away !!!
