The tower of london is still registered as a prison and can be used in any case deemed suitable, cases of war seem the most liklely, quite rightly Rudolf Hess was the last person held there. Unfortunatly people can no longer be hung for high treason in the U.K. It was one of the laws that escaped modernisation due to the fact it doesn't happen everyday! It was changed by the Labour government in 1998. The last treason trial was in 1946. The maximum penalty for High treason is life inprisonment. Sorry!

I suppose it COULD but one of Britain's high security prisons would be better set up for prisoners and would be the obvious choice. The Tower is now more of a tourist attraction pous a place to store the crown jewels. I'd be very surprised if they reinstated it as a prison.

By the way, we were at the Tower just a month ago - it really is a wonderful site.

Yes - the tower was last used during World War II. Rudolf Hess was held there before being deported back to Germany in 1945.

The royal family doesn't use the tower or the guillotine. The modern version is to spread rumors that the offending person is mentally unstable, then, conveniently arrange for them to die in a car accident, then blame it on someone else.

That would be cool, but Not possible!.
It is currently one of the most important and visited museums in London, and make it a prison again would create more restrictions for tourists and increase their overall costs, I think.
They already have facilities for traitors.

It was last used as a prison in the 2nd World War - it could be put back to that use if the need arose.

You don't need a prison for people convicted of treason. The death penalty still applies for this crime.
