To not have to bother to talk to us, to get away with something, and almost certainly just to annoy us.

Not just Mexicans. I know so many others that can speak and understand english and pretend they can't. If they could see the stupit expression on their faces when they pretend maybe they would smarten up. Really. Study their face closely when they begin with " I don't speak any english."

I always pretend I can't speak English if some random guy starts talking to me. I've pretended I was deaf before, too, and just ignored them, but they just keep repeating themselves adnaseum, usually. It's better to pretend you don't speak English than to tell some wack-a-doo you don't want to talk to him.

For at least some of them, the same reason that I sometimes don't speak to people in Spanish even though I can. Fear of the unknown, intimidation, fear that you'll get yourself into a situation (linguistically) that you can't handle. Some of them just want to keep separate, but those people probably aren't worth your while trying to talk to anyway.

Because the if they pretend they don't understand then we'll leave them alone. Then they can go back to doing nothing.

because they want to know what we know, and some arent comfortable with speaking english, because some white ppl make fun of them. I think they do it because they can and they feel superior speaking a foreign language, and talking about ppl when we whites don't know what they are saying.

alot of people who speak foreign languages pretend that they cannot speak english and i think they do it so that if you are bad-mouthing a part or person of the country they would know.

Even better question ...why do some americans never show the interest to learn any other language besides theirs? ...I mean, it is not exactly like the opportunities aren't there for them.
