The Japanese have an old remedy for keeping cats away. They put water in a plastic jug or bottle in certain spots that cats like to come and it supposedly keeps them away.......
But don't ask me how, they think it has something to do with the cat seeing a reflection. I see jugs of water just about everywhere in Japan. Especially in front of the entrances to homes and/or gardens, so it must work to some degree.....

I had this same problem. What I did was sprinkle ground cayenne pepper all over the area they tend to go. The next time they dig there and then lick their paws to clean them they get a burning mouth and don't forget it. The pepper should not hurt the plants. If you have to water the area just reapply when the soil is dry. If you go to the supermarket go to the spice section and get the cayenne pepper in the individual bags, it's much cheaper. Good luck!

Well first of all, don't harm the animals. The vet in your area will have some spray that cats will avoid wherever it is sprayed. This should encourage them to defecate somewhere besides your garden.I bet your garden is as pretty as your mouth.

Sprinkle ground black perrer on the soil, it won't hurt the plants or cats but it will bother them enough that they won't come back.
Plant marigolds, they have a subtle smell that birds and animals don't like

Get a dog! I've tried everything else and the little gits still come in and do their stuff, and they do it on purpose, cos they know how much it irritates me. Although if you put a bit of tabasco in the water, it makes the water pistol game much more fun!!!
