Why does my computer ask what I want to "save as" when the file already has a name?

It asks if I want to save a document after I have already done a "Save as" for that file. (I know I may have hit "Save" by mistake.) But what happens is, I say yes, I want to save the changes to the file I am working with, but then the box shows up for me to create a new file name. even though it already has a name..

You can save it again and then delete the old one from your files. I have done the same thing. I modified a file and had to re save it as another name.
