Yes, I agree. I am surprised that the "Black Magic"chocolates are still being sold in the UK with that name as in South Africa you can no longer get these chocolates because of this name. Next 'they' will be demanding that adverts do not advertise soap powder making your clothes "whiter than white!

Yes I do think it's the strangulation of our nation. I think that it has gone far too far. We were once a free country and prided ourselves that free speech was an everyday part of our life. I can understand why more insulting words should not be used but please lets keep a sense of perspective. A few years ago I was watching our local carnival with two African friends- one of the floats had youngsters dressed as monkeys dancing to Jungle Rock - it was hilarious! A few days later a complaint was made because someone said that Afro Caribbeans and Africans would feel it was referring to them. My two friends were furious how dare someone be so patronising as to think that they would even consider for one moment that they were being referred to. After all one was a lawyer and the other a Bishop! I feel that political correctness insults those they say they are protecting and causes more divisions in society. As for the bigger picture that one of the answers mentioned - stifle free speech and discussion and you get a dictatorship!

When I was little, 2 of my favourite stories were Little Black Sambo and The Five Chinese Brothers. For years now (a decade or two?) you haven't even able to buy them (except maybe a second-hand book store) let alone check them out of a public library. And there was (is) nothing wrong with them. They were great stories, with a moral, no less!!! about overcoming adversity. Racism lies in people's minds, not in books or words or songs.

Have had a belly full of it.............it has gone way out of bounds and common sense and is now interfering with normal life and our survival as a nation.

What I cannot understand is the world is more violent and insane than ever, including domesticlly and we Americans are bending over backwards to be PC. Our military has the media on the battlefield with them watching and reporting if a head chopping terrorist is not treated right!!!!!!!!!! in a humane and PC way.

The trouble is committees decide what is right or wrong for society now.
We live in fear of being sued.
What really gets me is the hypocrisy of PC. For instance you have the MOBO awards(Music Of Black Origin) which are great and I enjoy. But if Simone suggested the MOWO awards (Music of White Origin) the PC brigade would go insane. No one else would care but the PC lot would make it a real issue!!!
The golly wog was pretty racist though!!

Political correctness is a myth. Nobody is stopping you from saying "baa baa black sheep" or anything else you want to say.

I have to respond not you your comment, but to smileys answer!!

To state that modern society creates this impression that male is best is absurd - especially in advertising. Every commercial break has at least one bewildered or inadequate male in it with the woman running rings around the incompetent fool. Now if these adverts were based at women at the same rate they were based at men, then there would be uproar!!

Political correctness will prove to be the bane of civilization. It will be solely responsible for the loss of critical thinking among the world population, and the dumbing down of our great nations.

No I don't - I think that language can be emotive and that the media ridicules (and in turn the general public) that which they do not fully understand.

The notion that male is best..that white is best is permeated quite often through langauge - it is a difficult task to educate the many but I think that those who bemoan political correctness just have a journalist's opinion and no real sociological/psychological insight at all...

I applaude those who at least try to redress the balance and am amused when people miss the big picture..

You are being told how to think. You are not in control of your own mind. Freedom of speech is a myth. I am not even allowed to answer questions on here in the way I would like without some tosser striking me a violation. WASTERS!!!!
