Go to the auto parts store and purchase either a Chilton's manual or a Hane's manual for the car you have. The ignition is turned and sends power to the solenoid that powers the starter thus turning the flywheel which turns the engine over when a cylinder is compressed it is sent a spark from the spark plug thus igniting the fuel in that cylinder. The explosion of the ignited gas pushes the cylinder down thus turning the crankshaft. When the crankshaft turns it applies the force needed to turn the transmission. The transmission then powers the wheels to turn thus moving the vehicle.

While there are safety inspections and emissions tests, these do not always tell the whole story. Safety inspections merely make sure that visibility is not impeded, all lights work properly as well as the windshield wipers. As long as all items are present and work properly there is no problem. Tires are inspected for tread depth but thats about it. Emissions tests check the quality of engines and monitor the exhaust output. As long as the emissions fall inside a set schedule, all is well there. So, that means that anything else that you might deem as "un-roadworthy" may not be challenged unless it violates the standards of the tests above.

On your steering wheel, there's a place for a key. When you turn the key, it makes contact with the battery, which is under the hood. The battery is connected to an electical prod. When you turn the key, the prod pokes a herd of hamsters that are inside a wheel. The wheel has a gear on it, which is connected to a chain. The chain connects to your rear tire, and the motion from the hamsters running because they got poked with an electric prod, turns the wheel. When you step on the gas pedal, the prod pokes the hamsters faster, in turn, making the hamsters run faster, which makes your tires turn faster.
