This has to do with the topic of 'Communication,' and whether ones ability to write (& spell) is worth the bother, and as to whether we need to 'Speak clearly’ ...as in 'the ability to communicate with clarity.'

This might not (to some) seem of importance, however......

In a hospital telephone exchange, a Dr / Nurse tells me ‘H/She NEEDS the Cardiac Arrest Team for a patient that is ARRESTING’ (Heart Attack).

But, where do I send the team when I cannot understand the name of the place / department the other person is saying.

This has occurred a few times in my personal experience (to me), and I was only been able to trace the whereabouts via the phone number the call came from (because of my knowledge of the system).

This isn't a Question, but a Statement of a reason for why these things are of importance: though not just within a Hospital.

A 'Billary for a handthang' turned out to 'Battery for a wristwatch.'
(from an American)

Anyone care to add to this….?

I agree. Lack of communication is the cause of many a problem in the world. Wars have been started because of this and marriages ruined. Communication is caring enough about others to make your points VERY clear.

Slang is something that hampers good communication. It comes from the uneducated folk who are too proud and stubborn to learn how to speak well. They don't go very far in society, but it's never too late to change ones thinking.

Maybe its a sign of the times when the cheapskate government want to save money and bring in foreign staff with a poor command of english grammar and departments under so much pressure they dont have time for an interpreter to decode what they are trying to say,sad but true dangerous times for the sick.

interesting.
yes I once got in trouble in school for doing what the teacher told me to do.
she didn't make herself clear and as a result I got a low grade .....but I wasn't the only one..NO ONE understood what she meant.
not the same as a life and death thing I agree but you would think a teacher SHOULD know how to make herself clear.

"Peanut-butter balls" was actually "phenobarbitol" and "Smiley Miley Jesus" was "spinal meningitis" for an ambulance driver who was talking to an emergency patient.
