Because the right wing ranters, under the tutelage of Carl Rove have DEFINED welfare recipients as wastrels and 'welfare queens'.

They have been broadcasting this picture with anecdotes and catchy slogans for a more than a decade.

In truth, most people on welfare are on it due to catastrophic health care costs, and physically unable to work due to that health crisis. It is too hard to ask a family who have fallen through the cracks from the middle class to abject poverty to speak up and defend the system - because there are plenty of critics willing to accuse them of sloth as long as they have breath. Those who rant the loudest have had their way, and now people are dying for lack of

Good point. After the welfare reform in 1996, the number of welfare recipients decreased by 60%. Compared to the unfunded liability of Social Security and Medicare, welfare like TANF is a drop in the bucket. We need to focus on SS and Medicare.

the problem is that the 'powers that be' in goverment would rather help people in other countries.

I wrote a letter to John Baldachi R-ME. He wrote back that it was the domestic programs like welfare ect that was crowding out the budget and not foreign expenditure. So I wrote back and aksed him if people in other countries were more important than his own. I never heard from him again.

I complain because I don't want my hard earned money being wasted on somebody who REFUSES to work. BIG diffence between welfare and unemployment. Now if your numbers were correct and only 2.5%, I think you need to commend Bush for that. Why should my money be redistributed to those who won't support themselves? I don't understand the mentality of the socilaist. If you're going to get what everyone else has no matter how hard you work or how little you work, why work at all? We already have those who refuse to work and make good money sitting at home watching Jerry Springer and Rosie O'Donnell. I have no sympathy and no respect for the abusers of welfare. If you want money work for it, don't steal it from me.

Why do liberals assume conservatives complain about welfare? Tell you what, assuming your figures are correct (which I doubt, plus there are the incidental costs to business plus the amount done by non-governmental agencies), your little finger only amounts to about 1% of your body. How would you feel about dipping it into boiling water? Too harsh? Okay, hitting it with a hammer then...?

Because I actually knew someone who was on welfare and said to me she kept on having kids to get more money because it would pay here and her lazy husband 350 more a month. Sickening.
I've worked retail and saw people who said they were on welfare pulling a wad of bills out of their bras and dirty pant pockets and I'm thinking here I am working a minimum paying job and these lazy people who shoplift and expect handouts need to contribute to society and quit expecting something for nothing.

Um, because we have spent over $7 trillion attempting to "cure" welfare, when in reality we have mostly an underclass of bums that don't want to do anything for themselves.

If you want to pay more of your income into taxes, have at it. When was the last time you wrote a check to the US Treasury just out of your inate kindness, hmmmm?

What does that have to do with anything? Does that number mean that there is no waste? Does it mean that there are now no more cheaters? No it doesn't. When we no longer have Welfare careers then you will hear the conservative complaining quiet down.

well hell! let's all get on welfare then. maybe we can push those numbers to an acceptable level so we can be respected and admired by the rest of the world. and when we achieve this noble goal, then we can truly boast... from each according to his ability, to each according to his need. now wouldn't that be a perfect utopian society?
