For 2nd time in 2 years, one of my hard drives has crashed. Both of them by Western Digital, who is ranked quite high for quality. Shouldn't hard drives last longer than 2 years?

I've got a old NEC one with win 98 SE on it from 1999 and it is brilliant - bit slow but..

I've got two Western Digital Hard disks (80gb) recently. Does that mean they will break in two years...?

As long as they last. It really is unfortunatly the only answer. I have 2 gig drives that are 5+ years old and have no bad sectors, yet I have seen brand new 150g drives fail within months.

My recent experence has shown that the drives over 80g seem to have a higher fail rate but across the board no company or drive stands out as being more or less likely to fail.

With a touch upkeep pcs might want to very last even longer. the area the following is that lots of the guy elements in digital kit are ridiculously low cost of their personal correct, some pence/cents for such issues as resistors and capacitors. in spite of the undeniable fact that the abilities to diagnose and are available across the defective ingredient are being lost in an age the position the added smart determination is to easily replace the entire circuit board regardless of if this is in basic terms a touch electrolytic capacitor it fairly is the basis clarification for the probelm. The existence on many pcs lately is restricted extra by employing the technical applications and specs of the hardware and the ever increasing demands made up of them fairly than the actual operating existence of those elements. i imagine you've finished nicely conserving the laptop for 6 years.

Depends on how you protect it and how you take care of your PC. Install a good UPS unit. The problem with your PC could be a bad power supply. I have seen PCs with hard drives that have run and run and run and ......... and those that have crashed every few months because of a bad power supply unit.

With normal usage, they should last pretty long. I've never had any hard drive failures in my life so far. Perhaps you may want to try another brand.
Maybe you should try defragging once in a while.

You might look into how hot the drives get...especially the 10,000 rpm drives...Get a cooling system for the drive...Newer drives spin faster and may fail because of heat...
