I have owned my own retail store for 10 years. The best piece of advice I can give someone is to have a secondary source on income (like a spouse) and don't expect to take a paycheck for a while. I put all my profit back into my business for about 4 years before I took any money for myself.
Also, you might have a local Small Business agency that offers free help with tax information and thing of that nature. You want to have all the tax stuff covered from the very beginning and file on time. Good luck to you if you take the plunge, there is nothing else like being your own boss!

Yes been self employed for the last 5 years. Somehow I never saved when I was employed; however after being self employed I have lots of savings.

No, I have consulted for other companies while working in one and enjoyed it, but I haven't done it as a full time job.

Yeah it was okay, except for the tax thing. Hate doing quarterly taxes.
