I'm a Registered Nurse and and every time my collegues call the doctor to report findings they say "sorry to bother you doctor but...so and so, ...and then they give the findings of the patient)...the night nurses do it more of course. I worked nights before and now i work days but i don't feel I should say "sorry to bother you" because they are on call!!! and they are doctors!!! they signed up for this. I"m a nurse who works there 12 hours shifts and when they call us during lunch break, no one ever says to me "sorry to bother you".

anyways, what do u think?

I am also a R.N. I work in the E.R. I have worked both days and nights. In the beginning I use to say "sorry to bother you but". I don't any more. Like you said it's their job but they are on call and there for the patients. If a patient needs medication that isn't prescribed to them, we need authorization from the doctor. At night if the doctor is a sleep and a patient comes in, they need to be awaken. I also work 12 hour shifts. If I am at lunch the doctors don't care (some of them) and disturb lunch to pass out pills or to look something up on a patient. Also if I'm charting on someone doctors also want something done right away on someone else. Some doctors are nice and some aren't. Don't feel you need to say "sorry to bother you", it's part of our job.

I don't think you have to say sorry to bother you, I think it is just their way of being polite. Some people would say excuse me doctor so and so instead. Others might just say hi doctor so and so. It really just depends what you feel comfortable with saying. I don't think it matters as long as you are not rude to the doctor.

You are correct. There is no need to apologize for doing your duty. I mean, you'd REALLY be sorry if you had NOT 'bothered' the doctor, and something didn't get done right, right?

Your right but its just being polite.
Every time my boss ask me to do something, He always starts of with " If you dont care" or " If you don't mind will you.......
He doesn't have to say that because it doesn't matter if I mind or not, I still got to do it. He is just treating me with respect and I respect him allot for doing so. Best Boss I have ever had!

they probably think they have to bow down to the dr's or just want to look good by being sorry to have to interupt them during their golf games or sitting on the sidelines at a sporting event =)
