Try checking with the coach or other parents on the team. Some leagues keep "hand-me-downs" to help defray costs. Kids grow so fast that sometimes last years gear no longer fits.
FYI, out of curiousity, I did a web search at yahoo with the phrase "second hand sports equipment" and got a ton of info. You should give it a try.

so you don't care about your sons saftey? old gear can crack and break. your sons safetey is more important than saving money, thats like saying, I want airbags, but don't want to speand a whole lot of money, lets just get some used ones, but wait, that defeats the purpose of airbags, and plus the other boys will make fun of his old gear. So if you want your son to be a crippled loner, buy him older gear, but if you want him to be a hip, physically abled popular kid, buy him new gear.
