The primary reason for this is because the battery associated with a new phone is most likely new and hasn't been used yet. The day's worth of charging makes sure that the battery is fully working at it's maximum capacity and is capable of being fully charged. Only initially charging it for about an hour or two isn't sufficient to "get it up to speed". I would recommend charging a new phone according to the recommendations.

To make sure the battery is completely charged.

Batteries have memories and if you don't kill the battery first, then charge it completely it will remember those guidelines when charging again.

Thus, your battery life is shortened.
