Lilienthal's gliders never developed to the point of being capable of long distance flight. The longest flight I've seen mentioned was 345 meters. He built his first successful glider in 1891. He built several more designs in the next few years, one of which was offered for sale. At the time of his death as the result of a glider crash in 1896, he had begun experimenting with powered aircraft. Had he lived, he well may have beat the Wright brothers to controlled powered flight.
