I belong to a sorority and I love it. I agree with a couple of the answers that are already posted. There are plenty of goos reasons to become a part of any sisterhood. It is a special group of women and a privilidge to obtain membership. But be ready, there are people who will just assume that you are a certain type of woman just because you are a member. There are those who will only be able to base their entire opinion of you on the fact that you belong to a sorority. But if you do decide to go through with membership here are a few thing to look for, a few things that could influence your decision to join.
One thing you would want to know is what the organization stand for, what where the principles under which it was founded?
What are the ladies in the chapter you are considering joining like?
Does the organization support or would they support things/causes that are important to you?
Are they social or honor, and is that what you are looking for?
What type of social/community involvement do they participate in?
You will also want to consider the cost of membership and make sure that you can afford to obtain it financially.
If you can't afford it alone do they allow for sponsorship?
You shouls also spend some time with some of the member and participate as much as you can in some of the activities that they have while you are considering membership. Attend the informational event that they should sponsor, and check with the activities office at the university to make sure that the organization has not been in trouble for participating in any activities involving hazing or any other policy that the National office would disagree with. and lastly, you should try and speak with the Sororities' advisor to get a clear understanding of the activities and requirements of the sorority both on a National and Chapter level to make sure that you meet them all.
After you have done that...and if you determine the answers to be to your satisfaction, the go for it!
I wish you the best of luck in obtaining membership in your chosen organization.

If you are even slightly interested in going Greek - then you should! You should at least try it out and see if it fits you. I never considered myself the "sorority-type" and I went through rush and passed through houses that I knew were - and they scared the hell outta me! I finally went to a house filled with girls that I clicked with- laid back, genuine, and nice. I felt that if I was going to go Greek, then it would be through this sorority.
I am at a college 3 hours from home and I am in my sophomore year and have been in my sorority since Fall 05. I don't think I would be back at this college if it hadnt been for the friends I made thru my sorority. I am a very homesick person and the girls really help to make a home away from home. For a girl that came into college without girlfriends and who didn't it the sorority "type", I can say now that I love every one of my sisters and would do anything for them!
From exchanges, to formals, to community service events, to campus involvement, sororities really open up the college experience. The downside: people will label and judge you from your letters and you will miss out on possible friendships this way.
Good luck!

I'm in a sorority and i think it's the best thing i've ever done....and i'm sooo not the typical sorority type....and my sisters are accepting of me and everyone else. we're a local sororoity, so it's different...our dues are really low...and the money we fundraise goes back right to us...not to a national office...we don't have to pay for insurance b/c it's thru the school...so that's good too! there's so many reasons to rush a sorority...friendship, sisterhood, leadership experience, self confidence, networking, and being involved on campus...it's so much fun and really is rewarding!

Sororities are filled with bitches unless it's some good honors sorority. But I still recommend that you join a co-ed fraternity instead.

Go for it. You'll have fun and meet lots of people. But don't let them try to change who you are.

Nope. I don't like places where people gather like cattle and are all the same as each other.
