Usually it is a tensed muscle. It hurts because it is not relaxing at all. There are various causes and various remedies. I recommend very gentle stretching that includes the area in your back that hurts. You can also make some Valerian tea, or any other relaxing herb you can find. If you don't like herbs, see a doctor who might give you a chemical muscle relaxer. Sometimes it helps if you lie on the floor perfectly straight, (keep warm, though) for about 10 minutes at a time,

Ice often helps. The muscle and other tissues around it are probably swollen, so 10 minutes of an ice pack (frozen peas work beautifully, as they shape themselves to your back) at a time will probably make it feel better. Anti-inflammatories, such as Ibuprofen will help, too.

After you are better, you need to work out what caused the knot in the first place, and try to change your pattern of movement so it doesn't happen again.

It could be that you have been in a draught. If you looked at a hair under a microscope and ran your fingers from bottom to top you would see how the hair looks like 'barbed wire'. This can happen to the sinews of a muscle if it gets too cold and that is what causes the pain. Have you been driving with the car window open or similar? Maybe you could have been lifting something too heavy and strained your back? Rest and keep your back warm.If there is no improvement see a doctor. Hope this helps.

Tension in the Muscle, it hurts similar to bending your neck and then it aches... just pressure and strain. The more you use that musle the less it will hurt.

WHEN YOU SLEEP ON A BADLY MADE BED OR DO CERTAIN TYPE OF EXERCISE , THE SKIN ROLLS INTO A BALL OF FAT, WHICH CAN OCCUR ANYWHERE. IF IT PAIN A LOT IT IS A MATTER OF WORRY AS IT COULD BE A SKIN TUMOUR AND YOU SHOULD SEE A DERMATOLOGIST QUICKLY.
