I don't have a router or a manual. I guess what I want to know is it possible to jump onto someone else's network? I have a wireless laptop and it shows wireless networks available. I will get a router, but in the meantime... just wondering if it's possible.

If the wireless network is unsecured, you should connect automatically. If it's been secured with WPA, you won't get in unless the network's admin grants you access and gives you the access keys.

If it's secured with WEP encryption it is crackable but advanced knowledge and access to specialized tools are required. The better tools run on Linux so unless you're well familiar with *nix operating systems you're not likely to get very far with that.

I take it you are not the administrator for the network so you need to find who it is and ask if you can get the key. The person who started the network will know the key. However in my case I have a wireless secure network and had a friend come over with his laptop and I could not remember the WEP Key for the life of me.

It's in the router manual. If the router doesn't belong to you personally, check with the network admin.

Pretty much what the two above me said, But also if the manual doesn't say check the web site, or call the maker of the router.

Also to what people have said here you can check the router itself. You will need to connect to the router with a wired connection, and then usually you open http://192.168.0.1 in your web browser. You will have to know the password to log in, and then it should be on one of the web pages.

see if u can log in as an admin and change the password. Many routers are still set on the default admin password which u can find by googling the brand / model.
