There are other mammals whose females bleed during their time of the month. For example, a dog. Also, hamsters bleed during menstruation. There are some animals whose uterine lining is not shed during their time of the month, but is rather reabsorbed. This occurs during estrus. I learned about this in my AP biology class, however, there aren't many animals that experience this.

OK, you people are a little unclear on what "being in heat" (estrus) means. Dogs bleed (sometimes) when they're in estrus. That means that they're *about* to ovulate and be fertile. Humans "bleed" (shed the uterine lining) *after* ovulation. The lining builds up as the woman's body is getting ready for ovulation so if the egg is fertilized, it will have a nice soft place to land in the uterus and it can burrow in and start growing. But if the egg isn't fertilized, the whole thing is shed and a woman has her "period." Not the same as the "bleeding" before estrus!

In dogs, bleeding pre-estrus means, hey! Ready to mate! In humans, it means, you missed your chance to fertilize me, buddy! But humans have sex at any time during the woman's menstrual cycle. Perhaps a woman's period is a good time to "mate" because women rarely get pregnant then (though it can happen--it's not birth control.)

NO ever animal bleeds but most do it to mate. we give of a smell when we are bleeding that attracts the male species. its just that we have evolved and class it as something dirty. were in nature its the perfect thing to tell (smell) your partner that's its time for LOVE and baby making.
