Well you should be in for a variety of answers. I would recommend something with a columnar silhouette. Try a columnar beech (Fagus sylvatica selections), some of which have beautiful purple or bronze foliage. They are very hardy, and slow growing, so there should be no problem with the space. You could also try common hornbeam (Carpinus betulus 'fastigata') the columnar form is again very distinguished. If you want something a little more ornamental maybe golden chain tree (Laburnum).

I hope that this helps
Good luck -

Brush Maple. I had a simliar problem a few years ago, and selected a Brush Maple. With only 15-20 feet between houses, like me, I didnt want something that would get to big and overflow on roofs, but would be a good blocker from them looking in my bedroom window. It's attractive, not a fast grower, easy care. Mine was about 8" tall when palnted, four years ago, and is about 15' tall now, but doesn't get real big, and fills in space nicely. Plant your right in the middle of space. Good Luck!

You need a tree that won't grow too large and that limits your options. I'd suggest a flowering crab. They are breathtaking in spring and lovely shade trees the rest of the season. Red fruits give them winter interest too, till the birds take them away. Read the label carefully, since some will spread more than 20 feet.
