I was four or almost four. My mother had just brought my baby sister home from the hospital, and her birthday is a week and a half before mine. In those days a Cesarean birth warranted a much longer hospital stay than today.
The reason it used to be desirable to get them in childhood is that it can be very dangerous to an unborn baby for a mother to get it, and it is usually more serious (and painful) the older you are. Having them as a child gives lifelong immunity.
It is no longer necessary to get them. There is a vaccine now that is much safer and gives the same immunity with out the potential risk that getting the disease itself carries.
