You are offsides when I raise my flag and the referee sees my call. I then indicate with my flag where the infraction took place. It is really an easy call to make, but a difficult one for some players (and parents) to understand.
I suggest the easiest thing for you to do as a player is to take a referee class where you will learn a lot more about the game than you ever did before. My daughter took a class and now knows what we look for and what she can get away with.

basically the off-side rule stand as thus: the defensive line of a team apllies a linear defense. this is to say that all the defenders stand in a horizontal line and if the opposing striker breaches this line and treads beyond it then that player is ruled off-side.

if you are past the ball when your team is on offense( trying to score) on your opponent's side then you're offside. There are some exceptions such as if the ball is kicked and u run in front of it, i think thats allowed.
