I have a Betta, his name is Steve. He's crimson and blue. He is spoiled rotten with his air pump, and he's very moody. I love him very much. I wouldn't put Elmo near any mirrors or other fish, it makes him stressed out and that's not good for your Betta. Steve frequently gets fin rot because he's so easily stressed out.

I have many bettas. 14 right now. Your betta goes nuts because he is trying to intimidate the other fish. Bettas originate from parts of Asia, and have evolved living in very small and shallow water sources. That is why they are so aggressive. With such limited space, they have evolved the need to fight off other betta fish trying to take their territory.
But trying to make a betta flare, while it looks beautiful, does cause additional stress on the fish. Don't do it for your own amusement.

I had 2 bettas at one time. I had bought one at Walmart and had him in one of those vase/plant arrangements (which they say are bad for the fish if they get overgrown so the fish can't get to the top for air). Then I was given another betta from work when the boss said we couldn't keep it there anymore. It too was in a vase/plant arrangement. They did fine as long as their bowls were separated. It is normal for them to aggressive when placed near another fighting fish. But they were just fine when put in a tank with algae eater fish. I lost one fish when we went on vacation and my husband, thinking to save on fuel, turned the thermostat in the house down to 50 degrees. He forgot that my fish were tropical fish and needed warmer water. The other fish almost died, but we were able to save him...barely. He lived almost 2 years, which is about the life expectancy for a betta. They are beautiful fish but not very active usually, unless you put another betta in view.
Now we have a 30 gallon tank with a shark, two blue gouramis, a algae eater, and a plecostamus (sp), and a tiger barb. We had more fish for a while, but they have gradually died. We don't have fungus in the water, I partial change the water and use water treatments regularly. We have double filters and aerators, two heaters that we use in the wnter, and feed t hem a variety of foods. They seem very healthy and content.

First off, when he "goes totally nuts", that's bad. It's causing stress to Elmo, because his natural instincts are to kill the other betta, but he can't. So please, don't do it anymore, for the sake of the fish.
Second, yes, I do have a betta. He's a male, and he's cream colored with semi-see through fins with red spots on them. His name is Brice, and he's my baby!

I have three bettas. The one I got first is Flicker. He is a royal blue veil tail betta. He is laid back and loves to just rest on his plant and watch the day go by. The one I got second is Finneas (his name is normally spelled Phinneas but I changed it for obvious reasons) He is light orange with red stripes on his fins. He is sorta active and sorta laid back and never is quite sure what he wants to do next. My third betta and the one I got most recently is Flamenco. He is my fanciest betta. He is a cardinal red/crowntail betta. He is high-strung and aggressive which is nothing unusual for a crowntail. Those are my betta babies for you. Each lives in a one gallon bowl and each has a plant and is spoiled on a mix of freeze-dried bloodworms/betta pellets fed to them one pellet/worm at a time. The are happy and healthy and love to flare at each other. Oh goodness! It is time to change their water! I have to run.

I have a red male with aqua stripes named Tron. He lives with a red and green aneus catfish, two white clouds, and a tiny adorable dwarf African frog. He loves Mr. Frog and lets him hop on him and perch on him when he's sitting still. The catfish pulls on his tail a little, but she's not too rough. Tron was kinda mopey when he was alone, but when I put in a teeny-weeny frog (not this one, the first one died), he really perked up and swam around all fluttery and happy. He seems much happier with company. If you get a big enough tank, bettas enjoy tank buddies (but filter them all properly.) He's not a loner at all!

I had a betta before and I propped a mirror next to his bowl. They are very territorial and if two males were put together they would kill till one of them was dead. They are also very brutal and rough during mating and the female is pretty battered afterwards. Mine was blue ..he was just gorgeous!

Mine is named "Fishy". Well, Rudy was supposed to name him, but never did and Fishy just stuck. Anyway, mine is gorgeous red with blue stripes and a really long tail fin. Mine goes crazy for a finger next to the bowl.

The only reason the betta goes crazy is because betta's are like chinese fighting fish, so they have to be alone, and he'll try to attack his sister if you put their bowls together.
