I was just watching the video, and it clashes with my original impression of the song...it shoudn't be so hard to figure out, but I found my self constantly over analyzing...

Never seen the video, but it has always seemed to me that its a song about self assessment. Its when he realizes he is capable of doing things far worse then he thought passable, then wondering how he got to that point, disbelief and so on.
