I am shopping for laptops and found one that is affordable and what I am looking for (http://shop3.outpost.com/product/4880360) but not quite sure what the modem transfer rate meant. Is 56 Kbps any good? Thanks in advance for the answers!! :)

The maximum at which the modems operate.
56kbps is an old standard used with all dial up services.
Cable and DSL modems will go to 40mbps or 600 times as fast.

A 56Kbps modem is as fast as they get. If you use Dial-up for your internet, this is fine.
