Depends on what I'm driving and where. A sports car on a windy mountain road, manual all the way...there's nothin like downshifting into turns. An SUV in traffic...automatic all the way.

I prefer automatics and so does the driving public. They prove this by the cars they buy almost 90% of all car production is equipped with a automatic at least that's what the auto mobile association says. There is little difference in the performance of a stick vs auto the days of 2-3 speed automatics and there less than sizzling performance are long over. The myth is still very much alive though. The stick gives slightly better performance if the driver is experienced where as the auto gives the same performance no matter who drives it. It should also be noted that the army decided it was cheaper and easier to train and maintain autos over manuals and is now an all auto force.

If the car is sporty and the transmission is good, then manual. The other 99% of the time automatic.
If the car is overpowered for its weight, then automatic.
Shifting manual is not cool when the transmision or the clutch is shot to hell. If you want to see how sweet it is to shift manual when the transmission is designed just right, find yourself a Mazda Miata, you can go through the gears with just a flick of the wrist, the throws are about one inch long.
Update: If you have knee or ankle problems, and you drive city traffic, manual transmissions are not for you. If you have a lead foot and you give a crap about the cost of gas, manual transmissions are not for you.

I always preferred a manual, because I don't like cars or trucks to drive ME! But, things have changed in my life, and what if I broke my leg and couldn't shift? So, I bought an automatic Toyota Tacoma truck. It's fast, but nothing like a 5 speed!

Both at different times and situations. When I am out driving doing my job and when I am stuck in heavy traffic I prefer driving a vehicle with a automatic transmission. However when I am out driving for pleasure or out on a open road I prefer a manual transmission.
