You can get filters that attach to the faucet to soften water.

Magnets are a joke. An RO filter will not soften your water. In fact an RO will not work properly if you have very hard water. Reverse osmosis units only clean small particulates from the water. Bite the bullet and install a softiner. If sodium is an issue do not eat white bread or canned vegatables. There is more sodium in two pieces of white bread than in a quart of softened water.

pour marinade in the water every few days, this will definately soften up the water then boil it for 11 minutes
