just have fun with it! its great your learning how to swim, i knew how to swim when i was 2 1/2, be free! once you learn how, try hand springs, flips, cart wheels, etc, be creative!

It's really worth it to invest in at least 3-4 lessons with a professional swimming coach or trainer. You can waste a lot of motion and energy in swimming if you don't understand the proper form and dynamics for the various swimming strokes. And at age 45 you are much better able to understand and use proper technique than the kids are.

I started swimming for serious exercise in my early 40's. I thought I already knew how to swim. Boy, was I wrong! After two sessions with a swimming trainer, I was getting across the pool with half as many strokes as usual, which meant I didn't get tired as quickly and could go twice the distance I usually do.

You can also look into masters swimming programs with your local health clubs or public pools. You get a lot of tips and improve faster when you swim in groups.

I spent ages in the school pool 'learning to swim' without much success. In the end I learnt in the sea which gives better buoyancy - getting out of my depth helped too!
The main problem with swimming is trying to keep too much of your body out of the water. Try floating on your front near the edge or supported by the steps for starters with just your fingertips touching the bottom. You will soon learn how much of your body needs to be submerged to float. Then you can move on to breast stroke which I found lifted my head to ease breathing on the pull back with the arms.
Once you can swim in any shape or form you can soon move on to more complex strokes.

Listen, it's all a matter of getting used to being in a prone position; animals pretty much swim as they walk and run but we have to adapt a new position in order to streamline out bodies and make progress through the water. Animals have longer necks and it's easy for them to keep their heads out of the water. We, on the other hand must put our face into the water up to our hairline and look through the water if we're swimming on our stomachs.

As you start to feel the water in your nose, relax and blow out a little through your nose and the water won't bother you, start to blow out of your nose when you're bringing your face out of the water and you won't have problems.. Get used to having water in your eyes; it's all practice and nothing more.

Also, understand that unless you're a weight trainer and you are SOOOO muscular that you have negative buoyancy, you WILL float by just holding your breath, whether you're lying prone or in an upright position (standing, the top of your head usually stays out of water), if you grab your knees and hold your breath, your back will break surface... the body has air pockets that help you float (stomach and lungs).

Get used to being on your stomach or back (if on your back, keep your ears in the water and chin off your chest) and you'll see how easy it is to swim.

Get the Red Cross book on swimming (call the Red Cross and ask how much it is and send a cheque) and READ it. It all makes sense and once you understand the principles of swimming, you'll learn much faster, and understand what the instructor is saying and why.

Enjoy it. It's fun and relaxing (and relieves stress and tension)..

it doesnt matter age in swimming can play a crucial role in your fitness but if ur technique is good trust me u ll do just fine n the main thing in swimming is that u have to believe u will not drown and so just relax and try to fly on the water nt literally but the only aim in saying this is that even if u drown theyll be ppl there to save u and in any case no one drowns by bieng still just have ur heart rate controlled have the movements right and throw away the fear n ull be amazing ...

The best way is to get lessons! It will really "pay off" in the long run and make it easier. They have adult classes...go to one of those, as I am sure U will feel more comfortable.

Swimming is great fun once U learn how to do it correctly!

Dude! I'm 12 and know how ta swim
Freestyle: kick hard and strong arm pull
Butterfly:2 arms legs kick @ same time.
Back: Freesyle on ur back? NO!
Breaststroke: Good pull and fly kick!

GOOD LUCK!!!! The Y (YMCA) has a bunch of classes for adults and children so join up and have a blast! Youre never too old to learn...unless your 80, we might have to draw the line there ..haha. ..good luck =)

not really any tips..............I've been swimming since i was 3 and have swam on a summer league since i was 5, my tips: take a deep breath, kick hard, move your arms in a circular motion, and you get a really bad version of breast stroke
