In many states there is little information that can be given out. A former employee cannot, for example, tell an employer that the applicant is a no-good, theiving, lazy )$%^))#.

However (and most employers will do this), the employer may ask a former employer if "they would hire this applicant again?"...And/or the former employer can reply "yes, I would" or "no, I would not hire this applicant again." (Read between the lines....so to speak)

In U.K no employer is allowed to give an unfavourable reference,it`s acceptable practise virtually everywhere in the world to say, this person worked for us for "x "number of months, years, etc. You can bring them to count if something is said out of context but proving it may be difficult.
