Take her to the doctor. She could have an infection of the tissues that surround the lungs or an infection in the lungs themselves. These are very difficult to get rid of and sometimes take many months to actually stop the cough and she may still be very sore for awhile after that. Over the counter meds usually don't work for this type of infection. She will need the antibiotics her doctor can prescribe.

You really should try to get your mom to go to the doctor. A cough that continues like that could be something as simple as an allergy but it could also be more sreious. Considering her age, be very careful with any home remidies that you hear about.

Hot tea will usually help. There are some anti-mucous teas out there too - generally billed to help with cough and bronchitis. I've tried these and they really help clear things up.

I agree that your mom needs to see a doctor. Hot lemon and honey or hot tea might sooth her, but I hesitate to suggest more without knowing the underlying cause of the cough.
Good luck!

My grandma uses a humidifier in her room at night when she sleeps. It seems to help her.
