and now all of these brown fuzzy things are appearing at the bottom of the tank. I have brand new gravel in a medium sized glass goldfish bowl with a living plant that the guy at Petsmart recommended. What can these fuzzy brown things be? And how can I prevent them?

Your tank has been contaminated from the plant. Pour the Betta and half of the water into another container and swill the remainder of the water around the bowl to suspend most of the particles in the water. Pour them out, refill half of the bowl with bottled spring water and pour the Betta (and the original water) back into the bowl. Do this every other day for a week and then once a week in future. Reduce what you are feeding him in half (if you feed him too much the water will go toxic and it feeds the fuzzy growth.

Those fuzzy things are eggs believe it or not. You cannot prevent them just give your fish a food with more protein.She/He losses a lot of vitamins when layng them. I think you have a female because males lay eggs at the top of the tank. You may have been told wrong? Regardless clean the tank, the eggs are rotten!!
If anymore are layed wait a day or so and clean it then. But if you want you could breed them! First, clean the tank; then, buy a male and watch the miracle happen. They will take care of the rest. But you would have to buy a fry(baby fish) nursery.$5-10. The male will eat them without it and buy a bigger bowl!
If they don't get along at first keep trying, maybe a little slower by adding him in for minutes, then hours, then days and watch how they react to one another!
Remember they still are killers even though the are different sexes! Also this may take a while so be patient.

he is in a GOLD FISH BOWL?
how big is it? if its 1 gallon or less you need to do AT LEAST 2-3 !!water changes a week, for 2 gallon, around 1-2water changes a week, and for 5 gallon an up once a week. because they have long fins, its really easy for those fins to get damaged by bacteria if the water is drity and the fish is stressed out! U probably also don't want much gravel because you'll have to clean it soo often, and the poop gets stuck there!
Btw , unless you have like a 10 gallon or biger tank, try not to give bettas filter, you will have to clean the tank less, BUT the betta will get stressed from swimming in the big currents with their long and pretty fins!
Make sure the water is clean, and don't forget water conditioner to get rid of chlorine and other bad stuff that can kill bettas

You can also use "Aqua Safe" (what I use) or another chlorine-neutralizing chemical to break down chlorine in the water. I think you probably have algae. You can get little filters for fishbowls--I have one that has a bubbler and a carbon/floss filter. It helps with the algae and keeps the water a lot fresher, but you also need to change the water even with a betta. They don't need as much oxygen in their water since they breathe at the top of the tank, but they can still get fungus infections and nasty stuff like that (watch for white spots or ripped up fins and tail especially.) So keep him clean. After a while, the plant will probably help with the algae, too, since it'll use the nutrients that the algae would use to grow, but it takes a while for fishbowls to "mature" (that is, get beneficial bacteria that help break down ammonia from fish waste.)

Get the fish a real tank and filter and that will stop that. Just make sure that you age the water or it will burn him. The chorlrine(sp) from our faucets will do that.

It may be dirt dust or poop. Clean out the tank once every 3 weeks. Clean it out now!
